DES2021 Destruction Derby Rules

General Information

  1. Drivers must be 16 years of age and having some form of Driver’s License. Ages 16-17 must have a notarized permission slip.
  2. Cars must be at the check in gate no later than 1:00 pm on race day for inspection.
  3. All entry forms must be sent to Debbi Benites 749 N. Everett Street, Ridgecrest Ca. 93555. Checks made payable to Desert Empire Fair, and received no later than October 10, 2021. NUMBERS WILL BE ASSIGNED AFTER ENTRY HAS BEEN RECEIVED AND PAID IN FULL!
  4. Pre-Entry Fee is $100.00 before October 10, 2021 after October 11, 2021 entry fee is $150.00. Entries include driver, 1 pit crew member, and a t-shirt. Entry fee must be included with the entry form and filled out completely and legible. Extra pit passes can be purchased for $30.00 each at the pit gate the day of event.
  5. Children under 14 are not allowed in the pits there is no exception!
  6. The drivers meeting will be held after everyone has passed tech and cars are in impound.
  7. Anyone driving a derby car on public streets does so at their own risk.
  8. All cars must be removed after the event (unless previously arranged with Debbi Benites) they will become property of Desert Empire Motorsports Organization.
  9. No speeding in the pit area. Speed limit is 5 MPH. NO passengers in derby cars during the race.
  10. All drivers must wear full faced helmets, shoes, long sleeve shirts, gloves, and long pants (no shorts). Goggles or face shields must be worn.
  11. No playing possum. You must keep moving and hitting with authority. Any car standing for 2 minutes without hitting will no longer be scored. The 2 minute hit rule will be enforced.
  12. Driver door hits WILL NOT be tolerated. There is no intentional driver door hit. So if you hit a driver’s door you will be DISQUALIFIED from that class.
  13. Drivers MUST remain in their vehicle throughout the event until the checkered flag flies with all SAFETY gear on!
  14. Management has the option to remove anything obscene or objectionable from any car entered.
  15. All decorations must be removed prior to racing.
  16. Winning cars are subject to inspection after the races are over.
  17. The ruling of the officials is final. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.
  18. Drivers are responsible for the actions of their crew members.
  19. Anyone entering the scoring tower will be disqualified.
  20. After the derby is over we will announce winners and payout in the Grandstands.
  21. IF IT IS NOT IN THE RULES PLEASE ASK BEFORE ASSUMING IT’S ALRIGHT!!

NO ALCOHOL IN THE PITS BEFORE OR DURING THE EVENT. YOU CANNOT HAVE A PIT WRISTBAND AND GET ALCOHOL FROM THE BEER BOOTHS! ANY DRIVER OR CREW MEMBER THAT IS CAUGHT DRINKING OR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS WILL BE IMMEDIALTELY DISQUALIFIED AND ESCORTED OFF THE PROPERTY. THERE WILL BE A ZERO TOLERANCE FOR THIS!

Inspection

  • All cars will be inspected between 10am and 1pm.
  • Decision of the officials is final in ALL cases.
  • After your car is inspected it will be impounded, ONLY the driver will be allowed in the impound area. You CANNOT work on your car in the impound area.
  • Cars not passing inspection will return to the pit area to fix any problems and return to inspection. Any car that does not pass inspection will not be eligible to race.
  • Only one driver and one pit crew member at the tech area allowed. We don’t need the entire crew.

Full Size Car Division (stock)

  • Open to American manufactured passenger cars 1964 or newer, including all metal station wagons. No pickups, jeeps or convertibles. No limos, full framed imperials or 4-wheel drives allowed.
  • Bumpers must not be more than 24 inches from the track surface to the bottom of the bumper. Bumpers must remain OEM stock in the stock location for that model car. (No Cordoba bumper on Pintos etc.).
  • All general rules apply to Full Size Car Division.

Compact Division

  • Open to 1970 or newer 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder cars with a Max wheel base of 107 inches.
  • Bumpers must not be more than 18 inches from the track surface to the bottom of the bumper.
  • All General Rules apply to Compact Division.

Full Size Truck Division

  • Open to all Trucks and Suburban’s, 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton.
  • No wood beds allowed.
  • Bumpers must not be more than 24 inches from track surface to the bottom of the bumper.
  • 4 wheel drives required to pull one drive shaft.
  • Truck bed must be welded to cab in 4 places.
  • Tailgate is required and must be welded or chained shut.
  • Approved fuel cell must be installed in the cab or the front center of the bed directly behind the cab.
  • Bed must be securely attached to the frame chained, U-bolts or welded. If it comes detached you will be disqualified immediately.
  • Standard cab trucks a window net of some kind must be installed behind driver in rear window opening.
  • All General Rules apply to Full Size Truck Division.

Mid Size Truck Division (Must have at least 4 entries to run this class)

  • Open to All Mini Trucks (4-Runners, Mini Broncos, Jeep Cherokee) 4 or 6 cylinder motors only.
  • Bumpers must not be more than 18 inches from the racing surface to the bottom
  • 4 wheel drives required to pull one drive line.
  • Truck bed must be welded to cab in 4 places.
  • Tailgate is required and must be welded or chained shut.
  • Approved fuel cell must be installed in the cab or the front center of the bed directly behind the cab.
  • Bed must be securely attached to the frame chained, U-bolts, or welded. If it comes detached you will be disqualified immediately.
  • Standard cab trucks a window net of some kind must be installed behind driver in rear window opening.
  • A triangle with your number on it must be attached to the roof 12x12x12 min
  • All General Rules apply to Mini Truck Division.


General Rules

  1. Fire extinguisher must be mounted inside car within reach of the driver. Original mounting brackets must be used NO tape or tie straps allowed.
  2. Extra batteries are allowed, a maximum of three. All extra batteries must be properly secured and covered with a non-conductive material.
  3. You must cut a 24x24 escape hole in the roof above the driver's seat. The edges must be covered with a rubber hose or something to make it not sharp.
  4. There must be a 12 inch hole cut in hood over carburetor for fire protection. No coverings of any kind over said opening.
  5. A triangle with your number on it must be attached to the roof 18x18x18 inch minimum and 24'x24'x24 max size. It must be easy to read your number from 200 feet away. TEST IT!
  6. All drivers' doors must be painted a NEON color. No numbers or writing aloud on the driver's door. This is to identify the driver side of the car, and to help prevent a hit to the door. Driver side numbers are to be located behind the driver's door. Numbers must be 24 inches tall by 6 inches thick, they must be bright colored and easy to read from 100 feet away.
  7. Driver’s door MUST be welded closed with 2x6 inch strap.
  8. No alcohol or starting fluid allowed or tolerated.
  9. All pot metal, glass, plastic and fiberglass must be removed from inside and outside of vehicle.
  10. Fuel tank door must be removed.
  11. All exterior chrome strips, clips and ornaments must be removed. Airbags need to be disabled or removed.
  12. Vacuum all debris from bottom of doors and trunk.
  13. Two chains must be secured from the front of the hood to the core support. The hood can be chained to bumper. One loop minimum. NO wrapping of the chain.
  14. Two chains or two bolts must secure the rear corners of the hood to the cowl or fender.
  15. Two chains must secure the trunk to the body. The trunk cannot be chained to the frame.
  16. Maximum chain size 3/8 no smaller than 1/4 welded links.
  17. No pre-bending of deck lid or hood.
  18. Bumpers may be welded to the frame, but no material other than the weld can be used. Shock bumpers may be drained (caution the shocks can contain high pressure) then compressed and welded. Bumpers may be shortened, but no sharp edges left. A chain (maximum chain size 3/8) may be welded to bumper and frame to prevent the bumper from falling off the car. 3 minimum 5 maximum chain links may be welded to the frame and bumper. All trailer hitches must be removed.
  19. No altering, reinforcing, or cut welding of frame or suspension is allowed. Suspension must function! No seam welding!
  20. Radiators must stay in stock location. Do not alter or reinforce mounting area. You may remove stock fan blade. You may install an electric fan. No additional water tanks allowed. Water only may be used. No oils, oil supplements, diesel fuel, etc may be used in the radiator.
  21. Original gas tank MUST be removed from stock position. Stock automotive tanks, racing fuel cells, and marine fuel cells are allowed. Approved fuel tank must be installed in rear passenger seat area. Tank must be secured to floor with no less than 4 straps, 4 chains, or 4 bolts. A properly fitting gas cap must be used. No rope, plumbers tape, bungee cords, ratchet straps, or duct tape. No "plastic filler type" paint or solvent cans allowed. No 5-gallon jeep or jerry cans. Make sure your tank cannot come loose and will not leak.
  22. No studded or fork lift tires allowed.
  23. Seat belts must be fastened to frame or floor pan and must be in working condition. Shoulder harness optional.
  24. All doors must be chained shut. (Chain size no less 1/4 welded chain and no more than 3/8 welded chains). Drivers door only may be reinforced with door bars (2 bars maximum), foam, steel, or C-Channel. No front hoops. No full roll cages.
  25. Transmission coolers are allowed, if mounted inside the driver's compartment, transmission cooler must be covered.
  26. MANDATORY support bar maximum 6 inches diameter pipe with 12 x 12 plates on the end will be mounted behind front seats between door posts. (B-pillar).
  27. Driver's door only may be reinforced or foam filled. You can replace the dash with a support bar if you choose to remove it. 3 inch maximum diameter installed from front door post to front door post. (A-pillar). Foam filled driver’s door is a very effective safety measure. You may connect front and rear support bars to make box. Two door bars driver’s side, one door bar passenger side, 6 inch diameter maximum material.
  28. Brakes must work on your vehicle. Optional drive line brake can be used.
  29. No wheel protection. No reinforcing of the wheel except a stem protector
  30. No reinforcing of rear end housing!
  31. Firewall all holes in firewall and the floor must be covered with metal or non-flammable material.
  32. No engine or tranny cradles.
  33. OPTIONAL: Roll over bar (Halo Bar) 1.5 inch OD tubing minimum .095 Steel. Must be connected to floor with 4x4 inch plates with minimum 4 bolts each and front facing kickers. Your rollover bar must be the same size as the support bar and connected to the support bar (see picture below).

  35. Mandatory: Paint drive line white! Drive line must be chained and bolted front and rear minimum ¼ maximum 3/8. NO WELDING!!!

Battery cut off switch on driver left side of steering wheel. The driver and tech must be able to reach it.
